Simon is a small boy who is very mature and intelligent even though he's younger than Ralph, and Jack, the leaders. His role in the story is kind of a mediator because whenever they have conflicts he intercedes them, judging who is right and wrong. Through the conversation with the Lord of the flies, a pig's head with a stick, we can know that he's the only one who understands about the beast. The pig is not a human that has an ability to speak, so the dialogue is imagination of Simon which means what he says with the pig is from his thoughts.
